  • Brisbane Re-Invent Your Career Expo March 2013

Brisbane’s annual Re-Invent Your Career Expo was held on the 23rd and 24th of March 2013 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. With dramatic changes to the QLD job market landscape after the large rounds of redundancies in QLD government and other industries, there was a broad range of people at the expo with a large variety of exhibitors. On both days I spoke about how to access the hidden job market in Australia, in particular Brisbane. As I had been speaking and connecting with a lot of recruiters lately it felt timely to share some of the changes that have happened in the last 6-8 months.

Some of those key messages were:

    1. In the 90’s and early to mid 2000’s it was all about the MBA (in most industries). Now it’s all about reputation management. By that I mean; if you were applying for a job with a recruiter, they  could almost guarantee they could find someone who knows you that they also know. So they will be able to get a pretty clear idea of what you’re like to work with as  they  trust what their  networks have to say or they have a good context of their perception of the world. What they say about you counts.
    2. Google yourself to find what people are saying about you. This may sound odd but I had a client whose profile I found on a website of digruntled women who had dated him. I didn’t find him by his name I found him via his email address. Be aware of what is available online about you.
    3. Ensure your facebook page reflects who you are professionally otherwise make it private. Be careful of photos you are tagged in and if need be, turn tagging and wall messages off.
    4. Create a Linkedin profile and connect with recruiters and hiring managers. Do not wait for jobs to be advertised on Seek etc. Recruiters will go to their networks first. Make their job easy by being easy to be found with a profile that is Seach Engine Optimised. If you’re not sure how to do this, contact us on the contact us page and we can quote a writer to write it for you, or alternatively come to one of our Linkedin courses. I also suggest putting your profile on www.linkme.com.au.
    5. Ensure your Linkedin profile and resume are marketed to the job the jobs you want, not the jobs you have had. Ensure the language, keywords, responsibilities and skills reflect the role you would like otherwise you will get offers for the jobs you have had.
There was a large queue after each presentation with lots of different questions, especially from people new to Brisbane and actively looking to build their networks and career prospects.
